Identity fraud can range from
passing bad checks and using stolen credit
cards to taking over another person's total
financial existence. After obtaining a
loan or running up credit card charges, the
thief typically disappears never to be seen
again, and leaving a ruined credit rating
that may take you years to correct.
Efforts to protect yourself
from identity fraud may include the
following:
- Shred
any documents and other information that contains your
credit card, Social Security, or driver's license
numbers before throwing them away.
-
Use passwords other than names -
don't carry
pin numbers and passwords with you - memorize them.
-
Be careful
when disclosing personal information and account numbers
over the phone, by mail, or on the Internet - make sure
that you are dealing with a reputable company. Find out
how your information will be used and who else might
have access to it
-
Sign and
activate new cards immediately
-
Don't
lend your credit card to anyone. You're responsible for
paying the bill, and any problems with the bill can
damage your credit rating.
-
Notify your
credit card issuer immediately if you do not receive
your statements as scheduled. Someone may have taken
them from your mailbox.
-
Keep good
records. Save receipts and compare them with your
monthly bill. Immediately report any problems or
concerns to the credit card company. If you order by
mail, phone or online, keep printouts or copies of
invoices and order forms with details about the
transaction
-
Check your credit report once or twice a
year to make sure it is correct;
-
Have your name removed form mailing lists
operated by credit agencies and companies offering
credit promotions
Make a
complete list of all your credit cards, their numbers,
and the emergency contact phone numbers. Store this
information in a safe place. You'll need this
information to report lost or stolen cards.
If you become a victim, notify the credit card company
and other businesses with specific details. Also, file a
police report to provide documentation of the scam.
